The Skyline Disappeared
Two weeks ago I stepped outside in Chicago, and the skyline was gone.
Not fog.
Not rain.
Smoke drifted down from the Canadian wildfires, thick enough that for a few days we had some of the worst air quality of any city in the world. Buildings I see every single day, buildings that were still standing exactly where they always stand, disappeared into a haze so complete I couldn't find them.
They didn't stop existing.
I just couldn't see them anymore. And neither could anyone else.
I kept thinking about that skyline all week, because it's the clearest image I've found yet for something I watch happen to high performers constantly. Your work doesn't disappear when it goes unseen. It's still there, still solid, still holding up everything around it.
But if the conditions around you are thick enough, busyness, deference, a culture that never taught you to name your own results, nobody can find it.
Somedays, that includes YOU!
That's the Visibility Tax.
Not a character flaw.
Not arrogance avoided.
It’s a structural problem, similar to the wildfire smoke that was experienced in many places last week.
What I Told My Client
I had a client turn down a director-level scope of work this month with no change in comp. Her old pattern would've been to absorb it quietly, fix it, and wait to be noticed.
This time she said NO! Her boss moved the role to someone else within the week.
She called me afterward, nervous, like she'd made a mistake.
She hadn't.
She'd just stopped assuming her work would clear its own path through the haze.
Here's what I told her, and what I'll tell you:
The fix isn't louder. It's clarity. It's naming what you did, out loud, before someone else has to ask. It's letting people watch you make the call, not just deliver the result of one. It's understanding that reliable and visible are not the same reward, and only one of them gets remembered.
The smoke cleared in Chicago after a few days.
The skyline was always going to still be there when it did.The question worth sitting with this week isn't whether your work is good enough to be seen.
It already is.
It's what's sitting in the air around it, and whether you're willing to clear it yourself instead of waiting for the wind to change.
What's Activating Me This Week
Read
Not about air quality on the surface, but it's the clearest explanation I've found for why staying unseen starts to feel safe, even when it's costing you.
Listen
If you want a masterclass in what this actually looks like in practice, listen to Kim Scott on Radical Candor, specifically on why waiting for people to discover your good work isn't modesty, it's just staying hidden.
Try
Once this week, say the sentence out loud to someone who matters:
"Here's what I actually did, and here's why it worked."
Not in an email.
Out loud, in the room.
Ready to Go Deeper?
If you read this and knew immediately which parts of your work are sitting in the haze right now, that's exactly what the Activated Leader Diagnostic is for.
One conversation to find out where you're actually invisible, and what to do about it before someone else decides your value for you.
Reply to this email, and I'll send you the details.
See you next Saturday.
